Coherence and the Coordinate Structure Constraint

The Conjunct Constraint has been shown to result from independently motivated constraints in several theories of grammar, for example, Ross (1967) notes that it results independently from his A-over-A Principle, and Pollard and Sag (1994) from their Trace Principle. We address facts concerning the Element Constraint, which bars the movement of elements contained within a conjunct as opposed to the conjunct itself. The Element Constraint rules out sentences such as (2), because extraction has taken place out of a conjoined verb phrase (VP).
